Food Allergy Camp Info

For those of you who are interested in camps for your children who have food allergies, Living Without Magazine has an excellent article by Wendy Mondello on food allergy camps in their current issues.

"It's the first time a lot of these kids actually feel they're like everybody else," says Lilly Byrtus, who started and runs the camp.

Anastasia, who has a life-threatening allergy to milk, formed special bonds of friendship at this camp when she was 13 and returned when she was 15.

"The camp showed her that she wasn't alone with her condition," says Poulos. "But my favorite thing is that it provided a safe but challenging environment for food-allergic kids and that children without allergies also attended. What a great learning experience for all the children."

Gina, thanks for pointing out the great article re: summer camps in Living Without. Eager to hear about the goings-on at One of the Gang at the end of the summer! How many campers will you accept this year? How will campers be admitted? Is there an application process?

Allergy is a condition of a living organism in which it reacts to a certain compound or multiple compounds(allergens), which develops on the retuning encounter with the compound. Physiological mechanism of an allergy manifests in production of antibodies. Allergy symptoms consist in mucous membranes irritation, skin rashes, unidentified fatigue, itching, dry cough, runny nose, sore throat and other. There are different types of allergens which can start an allergic reactions for example: Dog fur, food additives, dust, pollen and others. Allergies can start to show up all through the year but for most people the allergy season is spring, late summer. So before that a need for allergic medications arises. On the market you can find all kinds of allergy treatment which are used in different cases starting from local or symptomatic to systemic medication. Be cautious if the condition persists without any treatment it can lead to other more serious effects.

I would love to sign my daughter up for the” One of the Gang” camp in Cranberry. I would like to know how to register my child for this. I read about this months ago in Living Without and have emailed and have not heard anything in response. Is there a telephone number that I could call? My daughter was diagnosed with 6 lethal categories of food allergies a year ago and I think this would be perfect for her. We live in a neighboring commnity to Cranberry.
    Thank you,
    Amy
