Do Allergies Affect Your Child’s Grades?

I was reading some of the responses to an overwhelmed mom (child had newly diagnosed food allergies) on the message boards at www.foodallergysupport.com and I came across a link to an intersting study that I had not seen before.

This article explains that nearly 75% of students taking allergy medication can expect to drop a grade this year as their allergies as well as the medications that they take affect their ability to concentrate.

As if dealing with food allergies, wasn’t enough. Here’s more:

“But the study found that those who had hay fever symptoms on an exam day were 40 per cent more likely to drop a grade between their mock and their final exam.

This increased to 70 per cent if they were on a sedating allergy medication at the time of their exam!

Teenagers with severe hay fever, and a history of symptoms in previous years, were twice as likely to drop a grade.”

I think kids should just eat healthy and organic food

  2. Comment by Gina Clowes:

Healthy and organic foods are terrific but they do not take away severe allergies, believe me.

I am interested in the atricle statements. I believe that my allergic sons grades may suffer because of his medication, but I don’t believe he’d be better off with an A and unable to breath, he may find that a hinderence to his concentration as well.
