Peanut Allergy Safe Ice Cream Parlor

Kids with peanut allergy or other food allergies often miss out of summer ice cream parlor trips. I found out about a summer treat that just might be safe for children with a peanut allergy.

It’s Rita’s Ice and you can view their Allergen Information here.

They do serve dairy flavors as well and have toppings and products that contain milk, wheat, soy, egg or other potential allergens but according to their allergen information, they do not serve peanut or nut products.

“Do Rita’s products contain peanuts, tree nuts or peanut oil?

All Rita’s products are derived from nut free sources. “

One word of caution: The ices are scooped like ice cream so proceed with caution if you’re dealing with a dairy or milk allergy as they serve milk products there. If you decide to try these products, you may want to check into their training on allergy awareness and avoiding cross-contamination.

Just thought I’d mention that they do make pistachio ice. At least it’s available in this neck of the woods…

My nephews are both allergic to peanuts. Babiesrus.com/Toysrus.com has a great product for children in school that have peanut allergies. The name of the brand is Stat Kids and they have allergy backpacks, lunch kits and wrist bands that alert teachers and other parents to your child’s allergy. I think its a great idea!!!

After reading your post last night, we located a Rita’s and decided to give it a try today. (I called first, because this location also has a Pistachio-flavored ice. The employee explained that the flavor is derived from alternative sources, and entirely nut-free.) What a great experience! I almost cried when my son skipped into the parlor, accepted flavor samples, and had his first “Blendini” with Oreo bits. When he rose from his seat to hug my husband, kiss me with Oreo lips, and say, “This is AWESOME!” I vowed to pass the “thanks” on to you. Gina, you’re a blessing.

    Nadine,
I’m so happy that it worked out for you!

I was surprised to read the comment above about pistachio because I was also told that there are not nuts or peanuts anywhere on the premise.

Glad to hear that you were told the pistachio was from an alternative source.

    Yeah Rita’s!

Thanks for letting us know about your experience Nadine!

Rita’s is absolutely delicious. It is so wonderful that my peanut and nut allergic daughter can eat here without worry. I think that Rita’s should specifically advertise their peanut/nut free status, as I am sure it would greatly increase their business.

The day I read the article, I took my son to an Orlando Rita’s. It was an amazing experience. He has never been inside an ice cream store and to be able to sit back and watch him order anything he wanted was…AMAZING! Thank you for sharing this information!

Posting this just made my day!!! We also have one opening up really soon in an outdoor shopping mall right down the street from us. Kudos to Rita’s!!!!!!

We have a Rita’s ice, here too. However, I was reluctant to go because of the pistachio flavor and my daughter has tree nut allergies (pistachio and cashew the most severe). When I asked them, they said it would be safe, but I was still weary. Maybe I’ll give them another try.

I have two childeren, one allergic to peanuts and tree nuts and the other allergic to just tree nuts. We love Rita’s!! And we go all the time. So nice to not worry.

  11. Comment by Mary Beth:

I am not sure how common this is (even my son’s allergist could not give me a confident answer), but we are avoiding mango. Mango is apparently related to cashew and could theoretically cause a reaction. Since cashew is specifically what triggered DS’s ana I’m not taking any chances (even though he has had mango previously with no issue).

    Rita’s does serve mango ice.

    SAFE NO MORE!!!

They are adding peanut products! Why dont these companies get it?

We buy Rita’s for every family event and even served them at our neighborhood picnic. Back to Philly Swirl….

I was so thrilled and grateful when I found out that they were peanut free.
Do they realize that half of their customers are allergy families?
