Peanut Allergy: American Idol’s Kryptonite?

This will likely infuriate the peanut allergy and food allergy moms out there. I debated about posting it but since I received it several more times this morning, I decided to comment on how ridiculous and mean spirited these comments are.

A celebrity gossip reporter interviewed one of American Idol contestant Ramiele Malubay’s teachers and found out that she is allergic to peanuts. For some reason, the reporter wrote that this information could be used to harm Ramiele! If I were one of the other contestants, I’d be very upset by this.

It’s one thing to mention that someone in the media has a food allergy but its another to assume that someone, particularly an adult would deliberately try to harm them because of this allergy.

“This could be vital information for fellow “Idol” contestants who might want to sabotage Ramiele if they ever feel she’s a threat. “

Here’s the link.

Food allergies didn’t affect Clay Aiken in the previous Idol competition and he is known to have a number of life-threatening ones.

What are your thoughts?

FYI Actually food allergies did hurt Clay Aiken when he was on idol. He had to be treated at the hospital the day of the Billy Joel competition performance (tell her about it) and got back in time to perform and move on anyway. Some caterer had put walnuts or mint in some food and did not identifiy the ingredient when asked.

    I didnt realize that. Wow.

But what I meant was that no one intentionally tried to harm Clay Aiken because of his food allergies.

It’s a low blow to the other contestant this season to insinuate that they would try to harm another contestant to get ahead. I dont believe it would happen.

I dont know if “they” were trying to make light of it or if it was just a joke. Not amusing either way.

I’m actually amazed when I do hear about celebrities (or people in the news like this - wouldn’t call her a celebrity just yet) are identified as allergic. I don’t think I would want that information out there.

It is so disturbing to me that a reporter would even bring this up. It’s not her fellow contestants that I would worry about it - it’s crazy fans of her competitors.

So sad that it has even become an issue.

Really, really tacky. I left a comment (#42 I think) to the effect that the article does a disservice to the contestant by making light of her life-threatening condition and also does a disservice to the other contestants by implying that they might be willing to harm and/or murder her to win the contest! I hope they apologize. Sounds like the editors there are complete idiots.
