[...] I wrote about this last year, and learned an important lesson. If we want others to be more tolerant and accommodating of our kids issues, we should step up and be tolerant and accommodating to others. Sometimes, we allergy parents get upset when people don’t “get” food allergies. How could they be so stupid as to cut the apple pie with the knife that cut the pecan pie? Or how could they have a bowl of peanuts out as our allergic toddler roams around the room? [...]

I'm sorry, but I had no idea anyone even still used the 'r' word.
What decade are you living in? We claim to be so forward thinking and inclusive and you thought it was ok to say that??? Too many people go through life 'not thinking' whether about food allergies or hurtful language. This needs to be a wakeup call to go through life more mindfully.

As a grandmother of two allergic children, I can't for the life of me figure out what the "r" word is. Our home is free of the three most serious food items and anyone coming into our home (service people included) is explained the circumstances and given slip-on booties to put over their shoes if they don't want to remove them. I'm thinking - I sure hope I'm not saying something I shouldn't in connection with speaking about allergy topics! Could/would someone respond to me off line via included email? Thank you.

Gina, thanks for this reminder. You are right, we expect the general public to "get" food allergies and the severity. We, in turn, need to be more conscious of other's issues and "walk a mile in their shoes" too. Thanks!

It took me till the second to last sentence to figure out what you were referring to! Perhaps I don't follow this blog often enough but wow. In the end I agree that we should all stop saying it.and people should figure out how huge food allergies are. there is little that is more frustrating to me as a celiac!
